The What is Spyware?

Spyware is software installed on a computer without the user’s knowledge which gathers information about user for later retrieval by whomever controls the spyware.

Spyware is generally categorized in two ways:

  • Surveillance software includes key loggers, screen capture devices, and trojans. These may be used maliciously by spyware creators or by other entities.
  • Advertising spyware is used for gathering personal information including passwords, email addresses and browsing habits.

What are symptoms of Spyware?

Any of the following warrants further investigation:

  • Constant pop-ups, even if you have a pop-up blocker. You may also have pop-ups when no web browser is open on your system.
  • Your home page has been changed unexpectedly.
  • Your browser gets redirected to another site when you try to go to a search engine such as Google.
  • You experience a noticeable decrease in the performance of your computer. Many Spyware applications are poorly written and use many more system resources than normal applications.

How did Spyware get on my computer?

Spyware is frequently installed unknowingly by:

  • Downloading free utilities such as add-on search bars
  • Downloading a tool like Gator ewallet that offers to save your personal information (including name, home address, email address and credit card numbers) and automatically fill out forms on web pages for you.
  • Peer-to-peer file sharing services are a major Spyware delivery vector.
  • A malicious website taking advantage of a security vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Sometimes simply visiting the wrong website causes your machine to become infected.

How do I get rid of Spyware?

Many spyware removal tools can be downloaded for free from the Internet (spybot Search & Destroy is one example), and will help you identify whether you have a spyware problem. Unlike Spybot Search & Destroy, which is freeware, you may have to pay to license the full tool if you would like the software to fix your problem. The package you choose should offer scanning, cleaning, real time monitoring, and immunization against future attacks.

CPR’s experience shows that severe infections may require the use of multiple scans and reboots or multiple tools to remove all the Spyware. Can CPR remove the Spyware for me? Spyware diagnosis and removal can take from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the severity of the problem. We cannot guarantee your system will function exactly as it did before or that we can eliminate all spyware or prevent future infections. Sometimes it is preferable to simply reload your operating system, which typically takes 1-4 hours, and will require you to provide all media and license keys to our technicians.

The Financial Effects of Spyware

Research by PricewaterhouseCoopers states that 46% of “Trendsetter” companies have experienced a breach of IT Security in the last 12 months. 24% of those companies suffered network downtime with 83% reporting monetary losses.

The Cost of Downtime Calculator

It is estimated that companies are losing 1.33 days of productivity per employee per year. CPR has developed a “Cost of Downtime Calculator” to help compute the potential loss of dollars for your company. Calculate your cost of Security Related Vulnerabilities:

.005 * ________________ * ______________
(avg. emp. salary)
(# of employees)

A company with 100 employees with an average salary of $36,000 a year could have a potential security related downtime cost of $18,415 annually!
